Time / Duration: 10am to 2.30pm

Imagine the house when it was first built in 1590, with the Warwickshire countryside around it and the village of Yardley a short walk away. Blakesley Hall was built at the end of the reign of Elizabeth I for a wealthy gentleman, Mr Richard Smalbroke, and was occupied by his descendants until 1684.

'Asquare meal.' 'Burning the candle at both ends.' 'Night night, sleep tight.' Pupils will discover the origin of these sayings, find out how they relate to life in Tudor times and learn about one of the oldest houses in Birmingham. Children will be encouraged to build theie skills of historical enquiry through discussion and an interactive tour of this fascinating building. Pupils will explore the rooms used by the Smalbroke family and those used by their servants, handling replica artefacts, learning about Tudor clothes and trying a Tudor dance. Pupils will use Blakesley Hall to learn about the Tudor way of life through experience and to contrast the lives of the wealthy Smalbroke family and their servants.

Pupuils will have an opportunity of experiencing a Tudor task of butter making.

Availability: 30 of 30 places remaining.

Costs: £20 per pupil place; there is no charge for Teachers.

Requirements

Blakesley Hall can be cool so please ensure pupils are dressed appropriately. Pupils will need to bring a packed lunch. Adults may like to bring their own flasks for hot drinks as the tearoom may not be open. Pupils may also like to bring a small amount of spending money to buy a souvenir from the gift shop.
